IPANEMA Ceramic Signed verso. From the edition
of 500
Created by: Josiah Wedgwood
The National Art Collections
Fund initiated a series of Art
Plates as part of a series of
commissions of contemporary
art in aid of its Modern Art
Fund. In 1989 and again in
1990, the Fund commissioned
two collections of
contemporary prints by
distinguished artists. The
artists commissioned for this
new commission included
Peter Blake, Patrick Caulfield,
Bruce McLean, Sir Eduardo
Paolozzi and John Piper. The
project was sponsored by
Glaxo.
Caulfield's counterpointed
waves, their curves playing
musically with the circular form
of the plate, recall a Rio beach
and 'The Girl from Ipanema'.
Fuller details about the piece,
including an illustration of this
and the other commissioned
pieces, are included in the
booklet sold with the plate.
