Notes: In Craxton’s work, farms, houses and animals feature frequently as well as Arcadian figures such as shepherds and poets. This small painting in tempera is a witty memory of a familiar farmyard moment. A black cat, starkly silhouetted against a blue Greek sky, tares out of the canvas with alert, aggressive curiosity. The cockerel below, normally high in the pecking order of its own species, looks nervous and vulnerable. Craxton was elected a Royal Academician in 1993. He has designed sets and costumes for Covent Garden. His work is represented in depth at the Tate and in the Government Art Collection and is held in other major collections. Principle solo exhibitions in public galleries include Whitechapel Art Gallery, 1967; British Council, Athens 1985 and Pallant House,
Chichester 1998 - 99. POA CONTACT GALLERY
