This picture corresponds closely to a picture of the same size and date in the Tate Gallery.
According to Philip Trevelyan, the son of the artist, the scene is Mall Cottage, Durham Wharf, Hammersmith, London, a property close to the artist's home where Philip and Ursula his mother stayed occasionally. The seated figure is Nadia, a Nigerian girl who looked after Philip.
As with many of the Hammersmith pictures the River Thames can be seen through the window at the back of the room.
Provenance: The picture was exchanged for a work of art by another prominent British artist and remained in his collection throughout his life. 60.0 x 80.0 cm (23½ x 31½ inches) POA CONTACT GALLERY
