Sunset, 1960 Oil on board Signed with monogram recto
A strong streak of yellow and red paint moves across a horizontal, landscape-defining format. Below is a complimentarily dark purple-blue expanse, which is an indistinct landscape, shrouded in the mystery of dusk. The artist spoke of his “attempts to say more than less” and in this striking example Kinley indulges his eye for strong atmospheric colour. Such interests later led him to Islamic and Indian art and, like Howard Hodgkin, Kinley visited India during the mid-1970s where his natural colouristic bent was further encouraged.
The subject of sunset elicits a contemplative or melancholic mood and Kinley’s temperament was certainly one to reflect about the transformations and upheavals of the formative early life. 28.5 x 52.0 cm (11¼ x 20½ inches) POA CONTACT GALLERY
